The University of Montana and the University Center Gallery would like to inform the general public and artistic community at large of the upcoming exhibition by Oregon-based artist Ian Clark. The show is titled New and Old Marks and will feature photographic, sculptural, and mixed media works. The opening reception will be held on Thursday, December 4, from 5-7pm.

Clark’s recent works explore themes of textural, cultural, and environmental decay.
The artist reveals a very close attention to detail, creating beautiful images that make strong use of color and (in his photographs) a very narrow depth of field. Clark is visibly attracted to texture and abstraction, which he explores through a unique, minimalist aesthetic.

Artist Statement

These recent works explore themes of physical, cultural, and environmental decay. My photographs commonly reference instances where some form of linearity integrates with the natural realm. This relationship is both fascinating and beautiful to me, often revealing tragedy that is becoming increasingly invisible.

New and old paper, mediums, and color and textural qualities make up this body of work. An old mind collected images according to her artistic interests; herein I have arranged them into a new context. My late grandmother and I both shared an interest in mark making, design, and painterly qualities- but appreciated different artistic movements from one another. New marks have been created where process alters the original intention of an image- affecting the context and previous meaning. Old content becomes new content.

My work is aimed more at creating a feeling within the viewer than providing discernable imagery. Cultural decay and America’s current economic and political standing influence my process. Our collective obsession with celebrity is nauseating to me and also contributes to my interest in recreating dilapidated colors and textures.

You can view more of Clark’s work at:

My buddy Jeff Hawe had a photo show in Helena recently…here’s his email and some photos.

Hey Liam,

I put a few pics into a folder from my show in helena. if you can post a little something on your blog that would be sweet i’d be so stoked….anyway the opening party for the show was friday the 14th of Nov. which coincided with the one year birthday of Papu’s store Four O Six. so there was a celebration of that too, which is what the photo with all the cups raised is all about. the photos i chose were taken either last winter here in the U.S. or from the winter i spent down in NZed. I printed five different action shots really large (60 inches long side) and several vertical landscapes really large as well (80 inches long side). The show overall was a mixture of really large prints, and smaller prints grouped together in three different series. The photos were of action shots, landscapes found while out n about, the lifestyle of snowboarding, and the faces of people that shred. All the prints were simply hung on the wall from wooden dowells, no glass, keeping it simple (and cheap, haha).

So anyways, too bad you can’t take it in with your own eyes. I think it would stoke you out, it really pumped me up to see these up on the wall! Some pictures just really come alive when they are this big right in front of your eyes!

SNOW REPORT

Most Recent Update:

Wednesday Nov. 19: Things are looking up! After talking with our super weather forecasters, it looks like we could have 16 - 24 inches of snow on the ground at the ski area by Monday afternoon. At that point we will be able to reassess the forecasted incoming weather for mid-next week and the possibility of opening during the Thanksgiving Holiday weekend.

The storm fronts forecasted for this Thursday and Friday look strong and we should get a fair amount of snow, so keep the faith!

Remember. . . .we need approximately 20-36 inches of snow on the ground before we can start things up for the season.
